THE CONTEXT

Revealing another side of James Ensor

For the exhibition James Ensor. Inspired by Brussels, KBR and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium explored the decisive role Brussels played in the development of one of Belgium’s most iconic artists. Presented at the Palace of Charles of Lorraine, the exhibition brought together paintings, drawings and prints to reveal how the city, its artistic circles and its cultural life helped shape Ensor’s distinctive visual language. Creativeroom was entrusted with capturing the exhibition and translating this relationship between artist, artworks and location into visual content.

THE CHALLENGE

Photographing more than an exhibition

Exhibition photography needs to document the works and scenography while also conveying the atmosphere and experience of the visit. Here, the setting played a particularly important role. Ensor had historical ties to the Palace of Charles of Lorraine, making the relationship between artworks and architecture an integral part of the story. The challenge was therefore to create images capable of showing both the richness of the exhibition and the dialogue it establishes between Ensor and Brussels.

OUR RESPONSE

Letting artworks, space and visitors tell the story

Our photographic approach focused on the exhibition as a complete experience. Wide perspectives reveal the relationship between artworks and scenography, while closer compositions capture individual pieces, materials, details and the way visitors encounter them. Together, these different viewpoints create a visual narrative that documents the exhibition while communicating its character and atmosphere.

ART & ARCHITECTURE

Making the location part of the narrative

The Palace of Charles of Lorraine is more than a backdrop. During Ensor’s Brussels years, the building housed the Museum of Modern Art and became an important meeting place for the avant-garde circles with which the artist was connected. Our images therefore give space to the architecture and exhibition environment alongside the works themselves. This relationship helps express one of the exhibition’s central ideas: Brussels was not simply a place Ensor visited, but an environment that contributed to shaping him as an artist.

VISUAL STORYTELLING

From documentation to communication

The photography was conceived to work beyond the exhibition itself, providing KBR with visual content capable of supporting its communication and extending the experience across digital and editorial channels. By combining overview shots, artworks, details and atmosphere, the resulting imagery offers different ways to present the exhibition while maintaining a coherent visual language. Creativeroom photography was also reproduced in external editorial coverage of the exhibition, extending its visibility beyond KBR’s own channels.
